What Can I Give

What gift within the universe could tell
What gift may have the worth,
What gift express true gratitude
To the one who gave me birth.
If I descended deep into the earth for riches
Climbed mountains high for rarest bloom,
Traveled great rivers searching
I would not find enough for you.
What could I ever give, my Mother
To repay for all your tears,
Your tender care, your courageous spirit
Unsung devotion every passing year.
Is there something you may cherish
More than any treasured work of art,
Might you know the purest content
If I give you all my loving heart.

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts............. Washington Irving
