I saw the sadness in your eye
Tender, soft and sweet,
I saw the little tear
Trickling down your cheek.
I saw you try to smile
Tentative and shy,
I saw your lip quivering softly
Please don't pass me by.
I saw your head and shoulders
Dropping in defeat,
You could not look me in the eye
Silent in your need.
I saw your heartfelt cry
And what then could I do,
In all your deepest sorrow
What can I do for you.
There is confusion in your face
From the battering of life,
As you wonder where to find
Some safety in the night.
The dark unknown, all lies ahead
Are you overcome with dread,
What fears loom high as a mountain
As you hunger to be fed.
Who shall comfort your longing soul
How can your sweet heart be kept,
Lord, may Your loving hand hold each little one
As this prayer is sent.

Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou
speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give
us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the
sight of every little child; and above all, our
Lord, to understand and experience how surely
and how blessedly Thou fulfillest Thy promise,
"Whoso shall receive one such little child in
my name receiveth me."
